BestOff – Health and Safety in the Offshore Wind Industry Through Skill Development, Coordination and a Corporate Learning Culture

The BestOff project focused on improving the safety and health for personnel working in the offshore wind energy industry. The Foundation played an active part in the project communication and networking.

Background information and project goals

Due to its relatively young age, the offshore wind energy sector still demonstrates knowledge gaps in health and safety management. Only a few scientific studies have been conducted in this area, and the data sets concerning various practical aspects of health and safety are correspondingly small. The three-year project “Health and Safety in the Offshore Wind Industry Through Skill Development, Coordination and a Corporate Learning Culture” (“BestOff”) therefore pursued the goal of improving the health and safety of personnel employed in the offshore wind energy sector.

The project partners (Ingenieurgesellschaft von Lieberman, Deutsche WindGuard Offshore, Zentralinstitut für Arbeitsmedizin und Maritime Medizin, Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf and the German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation) seeked to uncover knowledge gaps in health and safety management and further contribute to already existing measures in order to further benefit the offshore wind energy sector. This was achieved through e.g. the development of handbooks and new, innovative learning modules, as well as through the establishment of a modular concept for safety and health protection. The Foundation played an active part in project communication and networking.

Project promotion and period of time

The project received grant funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. It ran from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2019.
