IMPACTS: "Setting the Context for Offshore Wind Development Effects on Fish and Fisheries" - Gill et al., 2020

The global expansion of offshore wind energy is not only bringing about fundamental changes in the marine environment, but also introducing new demands for assessing and managing ecological and socio-economic impacts. The article “Setting the Context for Offshore Wind Development Effects on Fish and Fisheries” by Gill et al. (2020) offers a groundbreaking conceptual foundation for systematically capturing the interactions between offshore wind energy, fish ecology, and fisheries – and for embedding them into integrated spatial planning.

From a multidisciplinary perspective, the authors analyse how offshore wind farms, as new habitat structures, alter fish communities, affect trophic dynamics, and can have both positive and negative impacts on fish stocks and fishing activities. They emphasize that these effects are highly context-dependent – shaped by factors such as site selection, development density, technical design, and regional use interests.

Particularly noteworthy is the approach of linking ecological and fisheries-related knowledge to derive governance, monitoring, and impact assessment options. This contribution thus provides not only an essential conceptual framework for future research and regulatory efforts, but also marks an important step toward ecosystem-based management of offshore developments in support of sustainable ocean use.
