Offshore Wind Energy 2016 in Europe: 1.6 GW newly added capacity – Total output now reached 12.6 GW

WindEurope today published the latest expansion figures for offshore wind energy in 2016: Europe installed 1.6 GW of new offshore wind energy in 2016 with cumulative capacity now reaching 12.6 GW.

Last year’s 1.6 GW new installations were in 3 countries – Germany (813MW), the Netherlands (691 MW) and the UK (56 MW) – spread across 7 wind farms. They represent 338 wind turbines with an average size of 4.8 MW, up from 4.2 MW in 2015. Last year, saw the first 8 MW turbines deployed in the UK.

In addition, investment decisions of €18 Billion were made in 2016.

For 2017, WindEurope expects an increase of more than 3GW and a total capacity of 25 GW by 2020 - double today’s level.
